After 26+ years of BJJ, MMA and Wrestling, my body isn't broken!

Keep reading and let me tell you more about this and how you can improve in BJJ and avoid the common problem of destroying your body in the process. . .

Unlike many people who've grappled as long as I have…

my body isn't broken! IN fact, I feel better in my 40s than I did in my late 20s

True story! I see so many people post about it all the time. Video titles on YouTube that read about how BJJ destroyed their bodies. Some wear it as a badge of honor, and some just got chewed up by training too hard.

Either way, I want to avoid being broken by grappling. Don't you?

Don't you want to be able to train for years to come, still make improvements, avoid excess injuries, and still be able to do things like go to work, pick up your kids, and live your life without being a quasi-crippled from grappling?

Me too! But I almost fell victim to injuries back in my late 20s.

This shift to training for longevity started off in my late 20s when my body was injured constantly.

Late 20s ain't exactly old, but back then I was racked with nagging injuries, had multiple surgeries, lots of time off the mat and even heavy bouts of depression as I went from being a full-time athlete to a broken husk that couldn't do the thing he loved doing.

I remember the wake up call moment for me was being 29 years old and waking up in the morning with popping knees, hips and shoulders. I'd have to limp my way to the bathroom for a hot shower just to get my day started!

At the same time I started looking around at a lot of the older grapplers who came before me, several of whom were my coaches, and their bodies were completely wrecked!

The writing was on the wall, and I was headed down a path I didn't want. So, I began altering my training and my whole approach to grappling and I'm happy to say. . .

I've been able to continue to improve, win competitions and feel healthier while getting older and training less!

I was able to accomplish this by changing things around.

It started with training less but having more focus and intent with my training.

This seems simple, but most people equate good training to mean hard training. It's not. You might get a good workout, but a good workout and developing skill are not always the same. This was a hard lesson for someone raised in the 1990s and had "no pain no gain" beat into their head.

These days I have a lot more gain and a lot less pain. Not the typical for a 41 year old grappler with 26 years of combat sports mileage.

Next was a clear focus on everything I do off the mat. Most people ignore this in pursuit of greater technique but think about it this way. . .

Technical know how is the directions set in your gps, but your body is the vehicle that makes the trip.

And as I focused more on my life off the mat and simple habits and routines there, my BJJ got even better.

Last is the mindset I brought to training and competition.

Another analogy to chew on is that you could have the most high tech fighter plane ever, but if you've got a shit pilot, don't expect anything special.

I've seen many grapplers with physical gifts and a disciplined lifestyle run their BJJ career into the ground with faulty thinking.

And after tweaking all of these things I experienced something I didn't expect. My body began to feel better, my technique improved and I started winning more dominantly in competition!

I've also implemented this with my coaching, gym culture and teaching as well to help my students stay on the mats longer whether they are competitors or casual hobbyists.

As a coach, I hate seeing my students get injured and like keeping them around. Plus, the secret of BJJ is long-term consistency, right?

After all, BJJ is a marathon, not a sprint, right?

And so, I've put all the methodology and tips into my new Masters Code audio program.

Why an Audio Program?

Well. . .a lot of people listen to podcasts and audio books for hours. These programs turn your car rides, trips and walks into a sort of classroom for learning on the go.

I figured why not convert those walks and drives into a mat room learning session to support your BJJ training.

I wanted to make something available to help busy older grapplers and give them ideas on how to adjust their training and their mindset and approach to training in order to get the most from themselves and do so without being injured all the time.

Think of the audio course as a chance to sit on the mats with me and get the best practices distilled down to you so that you can execute on them yourself.

To help you decide whether my Masters Code audio program is a good fit, here are some of the ideas that the course teaches:

Chewy's simplistic method to actually retain the information you're learning in BJJ (Apply this to instructionals, classes or seminars if you actually want to remember what you're learning.)

The BJJ position blueprint I’d give to any older grappler wanting to focus on longevity. (Technical and positional choice has a BIG impact on your BJJ game. I lay out the fundamentals of what I focus on and what I’d encourage you to focus on as an older grappler.

How to avoid the mistake that’s wrecking your progress. (And it’s happening every round.)

A legitimate way to improve in BJJ, even if you only train 2-3 days a week. (A lot of people think the only way to improve is by training more. Training more can be good sometimes, but it’s not always necessary or even possible for many older grapplers with lives outside the gym.)

The real truth about using TRT as an older grappler.

The best things you can do outside of the gym to support your BJJ training inside the gym. (Probably some of the most important stuff you can do to keep grappling as you get older happens outside of the gym, not inside.)

How I meal prep in 1 hour. (Everyone knows they need to eat to support performance. But the meal prepping is hard for a lot of people. I break down my simple process for preparing a buttload of food in just 1 hour.)

The best piece of training advice dozens of high level black belts agree on. (This list of black belts include multiple time world champions, ADCC champs and your regular rank-and-file club black belt. They all come to this same piece of simple, but critical advice for improving and not destroying your body in the process.)

The absolute WORST mistake any older grappler can make. (This is honestly the worst mistake any grappler can make, period, but it’s even worse when you’re past the age of 30.)

The side of discipline people born in the 1900s get wrong and it can rob them of progress and motivation. (If you were born in the 1900s when dinosaurs roamed the earth and you rented videos from a store. You’ve probably developed a strong mindset that can become your biggest enemy when it comes to discipline.)

How to get more flexible as an older grappler. (As I said earlier, I feel better now in a lot of ways than I did when I was in my 20s. And I’m actually more flexible now than I was back then. I share some simple adjustments to your lifting and exercise routine that could help you.)

Why the 1 thing every grappler hates doing could be the secret to getting more from your training. (Getting my students to do this is like pulling teeth, but when they do it they usually have great results.)

The simple piece of bodybuilding advice that can help you be more effective in BJJ, the gym and even in life. (Honoring this basic bodybuilding principle has helped me avoid injury, get better training and avoid being mentally fatigued or negatively affecting my work or family life.)

Why trying to be well rounded can ruin your progress. (The common sense idea of being well rounded sounds good on paper, but it leads to a lot of problems and it’s not what the best in BJJ do even if they talk about it.)

How to actually implement what you learn in BJJ instructionals into action, even if you struggle to remember all the techniques in BJJ.

A rolling strategy to avoid getting gassed out by younger grapplers. (I use this all the time at seminars and when visiting gyms with young competitors. It’s a terrible competition strategy, but it’s great for the gym when you want to keep rolling and avoid being exhausted in the process.)

The correct way to use comparison to improve your skills (Some say comparison is the thief of joy. . . nonsense. . . it's a useful calibration tool IF done right!)

A common situation in the gym that makes older grapplers feel mentally weak, like a b!@#h, but it actually makes them smarter and helps them improve.

Why you should steer clear of chasing more and more techniques! (You don’t need more techniques… you need this instead.)

How to watch BJJ matches to extract the best techniques & positions for your BJJ game (I've done this since I was a white belt and it helped me learn my style before I even knew what it was.)

My Sunday night "trick" for getting all my training in for the week (This only applies to you if you're a busy person like me.)

How to improve without living in the gym (Business is often laziness or poor planning in disguise. I promise you that you don't have to live in the gym to improve in BJJ. You may never be a 7x Adult world champion but you can still be damn good!)

My "scientific" method for measuring my rolling intensity (I use a simple fitness gadget to keep me on track with my rolling intensity whether I want to go hard or light.)

The single most impactful thing you can do to radically improve in BJJ that has NOTHING to do with technique (I say this with no hyperbole or overexaggeration. I've seen many of my students improve incredibly fast by focusing less on technique and giving more attention t something else that many BJJ practitioners ignore.)

How to escape the dreaded dip of "BJJ Burnout" that everyone experiences (Everyone hits a wall at some point where they feel burnt out with BJJ, having the tools to deal with this will determine your long-term progression and enjoyment of BJJ.)

You’ll also get all of the future updates I add! Because I’m always learning new information, having great conversations with older black belts.

Included with the Masters Code program are 6 additional bonuses!

Let me tell you a little more about each bonus so you know what you'll be getting. . .

This is a collection of videos going over side control and mount escapes. Basically, pin escapes. The bonus includes. . .

✅A recording from 1 of my Chewjitsu camps and some of my most popular Youtube videos that cover the subject, all rolled up into 1!

âś…How to escape a tight side control position (even against a much larger opponent).

✅The "Leg Swing" to off balance people squeezing in side control (This is a life saver against people just trying to squeeze you in side control and the tighter they squeeze the easier it becomes to throw them off balance).

✅The sneaky Mount escape to leg attack (Even if you're not a big leg locker this can make people respect your escaping game like they respect submissions in BJJ).

âś…The "goofiest" looking mount escape that works like gangbusters. (I've used this one in competitions and it works like a charm, although anytime I teach it people always laugh a bit.)

✅The finer details that come from teaching a class (Anytime I teach a group things just come out about the material that wouldn't come out otherwise).

This Rolling Breakdowns is a collection of narrated rolls and matches. It includes. . .

✅How I roll like an "old man" against younger grapplers to conserve energy (in this breakdown I'll show you exactly how I do it and how to train it).

✅The strategy I use to make escaping side control EASY (Sounds like a pipedream to some but do it right and side control isn't that bad of a position and is easy to escape. It takes practice for sure, but I'll show you how to do it).

âś…How to roll at open mats to get more skill. More on this for a second.

I show you a video of me intentionally rolling at an open mat to work on specific skills. This is so important! It's what the best in BJJ do and the sooner you do it, the better you'll be. . . faster!

✅A breakdown of my 2022 No Gi Worlds Gold Medal run (Where I show you a simple strategy I've used to win countless competitions. It's so simple you can start trying it the next time you roll).

✅Me using my escapes and defense against brown and black belts (Yes! me actually using techniques of similarly skilled opponents and training partners so you can see how it really works).

✅Guard retention for older grapplers who aren't flexible (A lot of people think you need to be ultra flexible to be good at guard retention, but you don't and I'll show you how to do it).

✅Never struggle with escaping side control (I had several people attend the camp who came back the next year saying they no longer struggle with side control, and even when they get stuck they have a system to rely on).

The Private Lessons & Chats with Chew is a collection of talking videos and private lesson recordings. . .

✅Multiple private lessons recorded (You get to be a fly on the wall while I has it out with training partners and students ranging from White to Black Belt in gi and no gi).

✅A private lesson focused mostly on half guard (Top and bottom details that can support any half guard player).

✅I teach a purple belt on dealing with North South Defense (After this private he no longer struggled with being stuck in north south).

✅How I use journaling to overcome anxiety (As someone who used to struggle with anxiety this simple practice helped me work through and overcome the negative self-talk in my head both for BJJ and life).

Chats with Chew is a collection of talking videos where I go into subjects that might not normally make it to Youtube or my other courses. It includes. . .

âś…What I do to shake off mental fog during the day (This is a simple practice I use to stay focused mentally for training and teaching and life in general).

âś…A "secret" I use to retain more information from books I read. Hint, reading passively isn't enough!

✅How to avoid the fast-paced mindset that ruins people BJJ progress.

âś…One of the best kept, and often overlooked, strategies for improving in BJJ fast. This was one of the secrets to my improvement and when I speak to World Champions, almost every one of them has this in place.

✅1 of the single biggest mistakes I see BJJ competitors make that leads to awful performances.

My Best of Older Grappler Youtube video is a collection of my best videos from Youtube and included in the program. These include. . .

âś…2 Effective Takedowns for Older Grapplers that Actually Work in BJJ (none of which require you to slam your knee into the mat!)

✅The 3100 Calorie Diet I’m Using to Fuel BJJ, Lifting & Lose Weight (This is an exact look at what I eat day-to-day whether I’m trying to lose or gain weight.)

âś…3 Guard Passing Top Pressure Tactics for Older Grapplers in BJJ (These are some of the simplest adjustments to make in your guard passing to slow down the pace and cook your opponents.)

✅The destructive mindset that destroys older Black Belts in BJJ (Understand this mindset and don’t fall victim to it!)

✅Avoid Joining this Cult in BJJ if You re an Older Grappler (This “cult” in BJJ digusies itself as progress but usually leads to more injuries and shorter BJJ careers.)

✅How To Seem Faster as an Older Grappler Without Using Speed in BJJ (Being quick and fast are not the same thing. BJJ isn’t about raw speed but about timing, purpose and being in the right spot at the right time.)

✅A simple strategy for dealing with younger fast young guard passers when you play from the guard (If you’re older and hate having to chase and scramble after the young guard passers, this video could be super powerful.

âś…The Slow Guard Passing Strategy Every Older BJJ Practitioner Should Know

✅The Secret to Training Everyday as an Older Grappler (No joke here. This is one part training strategy and 1 part training mentality. I implement this myself.)

✅Slow Down Young Athletic Opponents with This Guard Passing Position (There is a specific position that every White Belt learns that is incredible for slowing down the action and limiting movement in gi or no gi. It’s also used at the highest levels of BJJ both in gi and no gi.)

âś…The Truth About Balancing BJJ Life as a Middle-Aged Grappler (This hard reality is important to understand as it should dictate how you go about training. Ignore it at your own risk.)

âś…How To Develop New BJJ Techniques from Rolling Injured (A lot of people think that injuries mean no rolling. Sometimes true! But a lot of times there are ways to work around and roll through your injuries. In some cases you can discover whole new positions and techniques that can change your game for years to come.)

Lastly, I've included 1 of my Master Vault Monthly newsletter. It'll give you a taste of the monthly newsletter that I send out to my members both digitally and in print. Inside that newsletter you'll get. . .

✅8 Training Strategies to Improve as an Older Grappler

✅How I started rolling less and improving more and winning more competition (This goes against the “No Pain No Gain” mentality we were exposed to in the 1900s, but it’ll save you from breaking your body with BJJ.)

✅My exact training schedule leading up to a competition (Keep in mind I’m a professional, so you may not train like me. But it’ll give you an idea about how to create a flexible routine that allows for lots of training with plenty of rest as needed.)

âś…The type of rolling I do more these days to get more rolling time, more skill and less injuries.

✅My fast paced 3-day lifting plan I used when I was a new father (If you’re strapped on time this one can be a great plan to get some solid work in relatively little time.)

Now here's a quick thing I want to bring up for my "Non Coaches".

I know the vast majority of people reading this aren't coaches who have full control of their training. Most of you walk into the gym and are at the mercy of whatever your coach has cooked up.

I hear you! And don't worry. I've built the course with you in mind. If you're a coach, then even better! But if you're not, I'll teach you how to implement the frameworks in the program as an average grappler.

All right, I think yours bearded gave you enough to chew on.

Now, if you're not convinced that this 5+ hour audio program, plus the additional bonuses, can help you improve in BJJ, avoid excess injuries, stay competitive, win more competitions matches, and have more fun with BJJ since you'll be able to stay competitive and build real skill, then I don't know what will.

But if you are interested, then check this out. . .

Instead of charging $100+ or even $70+ like I usually do for my courses, if I hear from you this week, I will let you have the Masters Code audio program with the additional bonuses for a "whopping" . . .
