Warning: Do not read this unless you are frustrated as hell with your ability to sweep and submit opponents off your back.

If you'd like to learn a dynamic open guard simple enough for a White Belt to use but effective even at Black Belt that doesn't require long lanky limbs or special physical attributes to use, then this letter will tell you how.

Long Ago In Gym Somewhat Far Away. . .

In October of 2003 I attended my very 1st seminar taught by Pablo Popovitch. ⁣

Pablo was (still is) a killer guard passer and I was excited to attend and learn some of his moves. ⁣

Unfortunately when I arrived he told us he’d be showing us something called De La Riva and Butterfly Guard. ⁣

As the typical White Belt with a wrestling background I was bummed. I remember thinking in my head, “Boooring.” ⁣

But it ended up being a blessing in disguise as Butterfly Guard became one of my best positions even when I was a White Belt. ⁣

Not only that, but the Butterfly Guard has also made all of my other types of guards stronger (I’ll explain in a minute).

And just a heads up, right now I’m offering an early release of my Butterfly Effect Series. In the early release you’ll be able to access the content, try it out and give me feedback so that I can tailor the 2nd update to your specific needs.

So if that sounds good, then click the button above to join me.

And if you’d like to learn more about how you can improve every single guard by getting better at one position and stopping guard passers dead in their tracks then this letter will show you how.

When people come into the gym some people just naturally take to playing guard.

I was not one of those people. Nope!

In fact it was so bad that my coach told me one day that I was practically a turtle flipped on it’s bad in the hot sun. Basically he was saying that when I was on my back I was helpless. I was COOKED!

One of the 1st things to change this sad state of a bottom game was the seminar I spoke about earlier.

You see, one of my biggest hang ups with playing guard wasn’t god given ability. It was my own mental hang up. Because I didn’t like the guard positions I was doomed from the start. But after seeing Butterfly Guard in action, it showed me how dynamic the guard could be and it chipped away at my stubborn wrestling-focused-needing-to-be-on-top mindset.

And within 6 months I was a White Belt who could use Full Guard and Butterfly Guard.

This fact may seem insignificant, but it’s not! Because one of the interesting qualities about Butterfly Guard is that it’s the crossroads to almost every guard position.

The Butterfly Guard makes your other guard positions better because it connects to all of them.

Like when I was a White Belt, I’d play Full Guard. But if faced against a tough bruising wrestler I’d switch to Butterfly Guard to avoid their smash. At the higher belts if my Butterfly Guard was stopped I switched to Half Guard, X Guard, De La Riva, etc.

That’s the beauty of the position you can switch back and forth between these positions without much effort. Here’s why this is important.

Each position has a particular way you counter it. Half Guard requires strong underhooks, Full Guard requires posture and so on. Well if you’re only attacking with 1 position your opponent can settle into a plan of attack because you’re predictable.

BUT, if you’re able to keep changing positions they’ll never be able to pinpoint what you’re up to. You become unpredictable and keep your opponent off balance the whole time.

This is exactly what happened in a Black Belt competition where I won $1000. In the finals I was against a much larger opponent who managed to sweep me and get on top.

Being down 2 points and having a large fella on top of me, I knew I needed to kick on the burners and push the pace. And that’s exactly what I did. I immediately went from Half Guard to Butterfly Guard back to Half and got a sweep and began working on my passing game and eventually won by submission. After the match my opponent told me he had trouble keeping up because of how much I moved.

And part of my "secret" is knowing how Butterfly connects to all my other guard positions. This way as soon as he stopped 1 attack I was already moving on to another.

So understand that whether you’re a Full Guard, Half Guard, X Guard. . . or whatever guard type of person. Butterfly Guard isn’t a replacement. While you may begin to favor the Butterfly over most positions (like Ole Chew Chew). Having a strong Butterfly Guard will strengthen all of your other Guard options.

Another great thing about Butterfly Guard is that it’s not body type specific.

Full Guard was never my jam because I have thick legs that are somewhat short for my size. So if I went up against someone who was fairly big I’d be barely able to lock my big toes around their waist. But on the other hand I’ve had students like my Black Belt Chad Hardy who is incredibly long and plays a great Full Guard game.

Both he and I can both use Butterfly Guard.

This is important because you don’t want to try to fit a square peg into a round hole by dedicating time and effort into a position that your body simply isn’t built for.

One last quality to share with you that I think you might enjoy knowing is that. . .

The Butterfly Guard Is Great Against

Top Players Who Try To Smash

I haven’t met anyone who enjoys getting smashed by the hulking top player who likes ripping cross faces for fun. But most people don’t adjust to that kind of game. I’ve watched so many people lock up someone like this in their Full Guard and be unable to move while the top player crushes their body into the mat. Half Guard (one of my favorite positions) isn’t always a good option either! Sometimes it leads to eating a forearm sandwich while you come up for sweep.

With Butterfly Guard it’s different. Because of the hooks the person can’t simply smash you. You’ll always have options. And if you know how to use the position correctly, when that bruising top player comes rushing in, they’re practically sweeping themselves.

Against tough grapplers with college wrestling backgrounds I almost always go instantly to Butterfly Guard to counter their relentless forward pressure, and with just some subtle adjustments of the hips I’ll send them sailing into the air.

Inside my Butterfly Effect series I’ll show you exactly how I use the position and how you can implement the techniques and strategies.

Here’s a little of what you can expect to get inside the members area. . .

  • How to turn “failed sweeps” into your best setups for submissions and other attacks.

  • How to get the biggest, strongest opponents with the best base to practically sweep themselves by simply coming up to 1 knee.

  • Develop the confidence to sweep or submit anyone off your back. (Imagine how good it feels to know you can play from anywhere, top or bottom.)

  • An effective sweep I learned in 2007 from an ADCC champion that you can use to set up sweeps or submissions.

  • An underused 1 knee position that will have the biggest, strongest opponent’s practically sweeping themselves.

  • A powerful position (proven by high level Black Belts for decades) for sweeping and submitting your opponent (can be effective for anyone, regardless of body type or even belt level).

  • A sneaky way to get the takedown even if you have WEAK wrestling and Judo. (This is a straight up BJJ way of countering tough wrestlers and judo players)

  • An effective sweep (used by everyone from Marcelo Garcia to Gordon Ryan) that leads right into submission (Works for anyone, regardless of body type).

  • The one position (proven by high level Black Belts) that works for any body type and also connects to almost every other guard position in BJJ.

  • How to take someone down without going for a traditional wrestling takedown or Judo throw. (This is a straight up BJJ way of countering tough wrestlers and judo players)

  • How to sweep someone with unorthodox grips, that are barely grips at all! (Look up “Ghost Sweep” in the members area)

  • The #1 Worst mistake you can make when going for a Butterfly Guard sweep. (Even if you do everything else “right”, the sweep will fail and cause you to get crushed underneath if you make this common mistake with angles.)

  • How to use a combination of simple sweeps to create an advanced sweeping technique. (Look in the members area under Switch Sweep / 1-2 combo.)

  • Small details that will increase your sweep effectiveness IMMEDIATELY. (For example, when going for the Over Under sweep you want to trap the overhook arm with “Lego Man” grip to ensure the opponent cannot post. It’s simple but not everyone does this.)

  • The major flaw in 99% of people’s Butterfly Sweeps when they first start using the position.

  • The specific grips you never let your opponent have when playing Butterfly Guard, if they get these, you’re getting passed! (I'll show you how to break them easily using your whole body.)

  • How to “trick” your bigger, stronger opponent with an un-sweepable base. . .

Into Practically

Sweeping Themself!

  • Become the bane of every big bruising top player by learning how to sweep them anytime they drive into you. (This position is a perfect “anti-pressure” guard.)

  • Like any position, sometimes it’s not going to work and you’ll need to move on. Inside the series I’ll show you the exact moments of when you move on. (For example, if a person steps you on 1 foot, it’s a perfect time to transition to leg locks and single x guard. Look inside the transitions section in the members area.)

  • Learn why you’ve probably been using Butterfly Guard wrong and didn’t even know it.

  • Why guard passers hate a good Butterfly Guard and how to use this to your advantage.

  • A fundamentally based Butterfly Guard system that works even if you’re a White Belt. (I used it as a White Belt and teach it to my White Belt students.)

  • The 6 inch adjustment that will put your hips into the perfect position to off-balance your opponent.

  • The honest, no “bull crap” truth about Butterfly Guard (It’s a great position but you’ll need other options in case. I’ll show you how it can connect to other guard positions you already use).

  • How to change grips from gi to no gi so that your game works in any style of Jiu-jitsu.

When it comes to BJJ I personally believe you should aim to have a style that translates to both Gi and No Gi (if you do both). The techniques inside the series show techniques that work in both this way you’re not dependent on the pajamas or the spandex.

  • A sneaky, “trick” that will have opponent’s practically sweeping themselves… without having to exert any energy.

  • Learn how a simple cross collar grip can defend your Buttefly Guard and have your opponent face planting if they try to pass.

  • Harness the 80/20 Principle and get more effectiveness with fewer techniques from your Guard. (When it comes to techniques, sometimes less is more.)

  • An effective Mount escape that will land you right into a strong position ready to sweep or submit. (And it’s easier then trying to regain Full Guard!)

  • Dirty wrist-locking secrets that will have your opponent's afraid to touch you! (Check “reverse kimura” in the members area)

  • A sneaky collar choke that works off of a failed sweep. (Do it right and they’ll never see it coming until it’s too late!)

  • Options in Gi and No Gi. (And how to convert 1 move over to the other.)

  • And a whole lot more, including. . .

How to use the Butterfly Guard to connect with other guards to create an unpredictable bottom attack (under transitions in members area)... How you can eliminate guard passing threats with a simple cross collar grip (under collar drag series in members area)... and perhaps the best part of all…

A System That Works

From White To Black Belt!

I should know after all, because I started using it as a White Belt (and still use it today) and I've taught it to my students of all levels (who've used it successfully.)
